Scouting for Food
Scouting for Food is Scouting’s community project aimed at addressing the problem of hunger in the community in which we live and work.
The Atlanta Area Council has partnered with the Atlanta Community Food Bank and Publix Supermarkets for this important effort in 2010. We need your help this March to put a stop to hunger!
The 2010 campaign begins on Saturday, March 1st with our Scouts going door-to-door distributing flyers. On Saturday, March 27th, Scouts return to those neighborhoods to collect the bags filled with non-perishable food items. Units will then deliver the food to local Food Banks (below).
Food for thought:
- Last year, Milton District's Packs and Troops collected over 16,900 food items for local area food banks.
- More than 1 in 5 (20.2%) of Georgia’s children live in poverty – that’s nearly half a million children under age 18. (U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey Profile, 2006)
- 36% of client households served by Feeding America (the national network of food banks) include at least one employed adult. (Hunger in America Study, 2006)
Since 1910, the ideals of Scouting have guided young men and women to perform service to others and to the community. Responding to the plight of America's poor and hungry is a traditional Scouting "good turn." During WWI, Boy Scouts planted vegetable gardens to provide food for the hungry. President Roosevelt called on Scouts to collect food for the needy during the Great Depression. Planting Victory Gardens were the Scouting "good turns" organized during WWII. Today, Scouts continue their Good Turn efforts in community stewardship through Scouting for Food.
